Banff Hot Springs – Canada and the National Park System

It was the discovery of The Cave and Basin, the lowest part of this system of Hot Springs, that resulted in the formation of Canada’s first National Park in 1885 that later became known as Banff National Park. The Banff Upper Hot Springs were developed as a resort and spa location to cater to the wealthy American and Continental tourist who would arrive by the Canadian Pacific Railway and lodge at the Banff Springs Hotel.

Banff Hot Springs is open year round and consists of one hot pool with an average temperature of 43 C or 110F. The stone bathhouse which was originally built in 1932 was restored and reopened in 1996. There is now an elevator in the bathhouse allowing full access to Banff Hot Springs to those in wheelchairs. Banff Hot Springs’ amenities also include a full service spa, a restaurant as well as a gift shop in the restored bathhouse.

As you can see, the Banff Hot Springs boasts a long and varied history. If you feel so inclined, you can relive even more of this history by renting a turn-of-the-century (20th) “swimming costume.” Don’t forget to take some photos to show those back home. And if you like that look – you can buy one to take home.
