Canyon Hot Springs Resort
Prevously known as Albert Canyon Hot Springs, they were first developed at the turn of the 20th Century. CPR workers first dug and then lined the resulting hot pool with timbers similar to railroad ties. The community of Albert Canyon served as a Canadian Pacific Railway station with a roundhouse to house engines to help “push” trains over the spine of the Rocky Mountains as well as a maintenance section gang.
With replacement of steam engines by diesel, the Albert Canyon’s extra engines were no longer required and the station was shuttered. The closing sounded the death knell for the community as the railway workers and their families moved where the CPR required them. For a time locals continued to frequent the old hot springs until the new Canyon Hot Springs Resort was built 2 miles away. The source was capped and a pipeline was laid to carry the hot mineral water to the new resort’s hot pool; 40 C – 104 F and the cooler swimming pool; 32 C – 86 F.
For a look into what life was like in the community of Albert Canyon, Hank Schut – a former resident, has annotated some clips from
- Pacific Northwest Adventures: No Other Highway
, an old documentary from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
